Subject: Opening Doors Exhibitions: The University of Alabama
The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library is the site of an exhibition in
conjunction of the 40th Anniversary Opening Doors celebration at the
University of Alabama.
The exhibition, Opening Doors: From Both Sides of the Threshold opens
Tuesday, June 10, 2003 in the lobby of the Hoole Library.
It features materials from the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library that
document the turbulent and triumphant path of the University of Alabama and
the Tuscaloosa community from the 1950s to the present. It includes
photographs, university publications, scrapbooks, and selected manuscript
materials and artifacts. Highlights of the exhibition include a powerful,
and never before exhibited group of photographs taken by Jim Oakley in 1956,
as well as selected materials from the Buford Boone Papers, and materials on
loan from 1963 Crimson White Editor, and Pioneer Scott Henry (Hank) Black
The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library is located on the 2nd floor of
Mary Harmon Bryant Hall, on Hackberry Lane on the University of Alabama
campus. The exhibition will remain on display through September 26, 2003.
In addition, The W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library will have on display
a traveling exhibition Opening Doors: Pioneers in Pictures. This exhibition
features a selection of photographs of the Opening Doors Pioneers, along
with brief biographical sketches. This exhibit will be mounted on Tuesday,
June 10, 2003 in the Bryant Conference Center, and on Wednesday, June 11 on
the UA Quad from 3-7:30 pm.

The Hoole Library is open Monday through Friday from 8 am - 5 pm and on
