During the first quarter of 2003 the ADAH Government Records Division has
been busily cataloging and updating numerous government records series to
make them more accessible.
Before cataloging series, agencies have to be documented. For that reason
the following gubernatorial and agency histories were created: Governor
(1999-2003 : Siegelman). Gubernatorial history record, with all of the
others being agency histories -- United States. District of Alabama. Alabama
Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board. Board of Dental Scholarship Awards, Board of
Medical Scholarship Awards, Board of Optometric Scholarship Awards, Child
Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, Board of Athletic Trainers. Agency
history record, State Board of Chiropractic Examiners, Board of Examiners
for Dietetics/Nutrition Practice, Board of Dental Examiners, Regional
Planning and Development Commissions, and Foreign Trade Relations
The number one priority for cataloging has been the records of Alabama's
immediate past Governor, Don Siegelman. The series cataloged from January to
March include Governor (1999-2003 : Siegelman) Administrative files of the
Office of Constituent Affairs, 1999-2003, one hundred eleven (111) cubic
ft.; Administrative files, 1999-2003, fifty one (51) cubic ft.; Subject
files, 1999-2003, nine (9) cubic ft.; Proclamations, 1999-2003. eleven (11)
cubic ft.; Speeches, 1999-2003, five (5) cubic ft.; Press releases,
1999-2003, two (2) cubic ft; Radio actuality line records, 1999-2003, one
(1) cubic ft.; Clipping files, 1994-2003, one hundred five (105) cubic ft.;
Subject files of the Chief of Staff, 1999-2003, fifteen (15) cubic ft.;
Scrapbooks, 1999-2003, one (1) cubic ft., and Vetoed bills and amendments,
1999-2003, one half (0.5) cubic ft.
Also cataloged were records of Fob James. Series cataloged include Governor
(1995-1999: James.) News clippings of the Press Office, 1980-1999, thirty
three (33) cubic ft.; and Videocassettes in the Press Office, 1990-1997 and
n.d., two (2) cubic ft., SG023977 - SG023978. A small but important group of
gubernatorial records were cataloged as United States. District of Alabama.
Administrative files, 1865-1868, two (2) cubic ft. These are the records
created when Wager Swayne was head of the Freedman's Bureau and Military
Governor of Alabama.
The records of the Lieutenant Governor, Steve Windom were transmitted and
cataloged as well. These include Lieutenant Governor (1999-2003 : Windom)
Administrative files, 1999-2003, sixteen (16) cubic ft.; Constituent
correspondence, 1999-2003, twelve (12) cubic ft.; and Clipping files,
1999-2003, ten (10) cubic ft.
Other series of note cataloged include: Legislature: Member's travel files,
1987-[ongoing], fourteen (14) cubic ft.; Foreign Trade Relations Commission.
Administrative files, 1977-2001, twelve (12) cubic ft.; Legislative Fiscal
Office. State publications, 1978-2001, one (1) cubic ft.; Board of Examiners
in Psychology. State publications, 1978 - [ongoing.] two (2) cubic ft.; and
Attorney General's Office. Speeches, 1988, two (2) cubic ft..
In addition, another twenty two (22) series descriptions were updated due to
significant accretions, butonly a few will be detailed here. These include
Department of Education. Correspondence of the State Superintendent of
Education, 1885 - [ongoing.] 245 cubic ft.; Alabama Historical Commission.
Subject files, 1967-1982, seventy seven (77) cubic ft.; Department of
Examiners of Public Accounts. Audit report file copies, 1909 - [ongoing,]
eight hundred twenty three (823) cubic ft., Public Service Commission. Case
files, 1906 - [ongoing.] six hundred forty eight (648) cubic ft.;
Legislative Reference Service. State publications, 1945 - [ongoing]. sixteen
and a half (16.5) cubic ft.; Department of Education. Correspondence files
of the State Superintendent of Education, two hundred forty seven (247)
cubic ft., and Department of Public Health. Annual reports, 1884 -
[ongoing]. fourteen (14) cubic ft.
