Subject: [AlabamaFolklife] Alabama Blues Project Update - 21 November 2002
The Alabama Blues Project after-school camp continues to be a great success. Besides the weekly instruction in their instrument of choice, blues camp kids are also getting to visit with world renowned blues musicians. Blues legend Eddie Kirkland visited with blues campers, who sat in rapt attention as he shared his wisdom and awesome guitar licks.
Many generous individuals and organizations have helped to make this project a reality. We are very grateful to all our sponsors, and this week we would specially like to thank The Children's Trust Fund of Alabama, Mercedes Benz and Bonnie Raitt for their kind support.
This coming Tuesday, November, 26th Willie King will visit the camp. A performance and jam session is scheduled to begin at 4pm. At 5pm Willie will visit with the harmonica, guitar players, percussionists and singers, sharing his 41 years of experience living the blues.
Willie has been receiving international acclaim for his last three CD releases. His high-energy juke joint style and socially conscious message make a unique and exciting combination. People love to dance to Willie King and the Liberators, and their music is attracting a rapidly growing devoted audience.
His recent honors include Living Blues Magazine’s awards of “Best Male Blues Artist,” “Best Blues Album” and “Best Contemporary Blues Album.” Willie has been featured on National Public Radio’s American Routes, has been the cover story for Britain’s Juke Blues magazine, and featured in the internationally renowned Living Blues magazine. His recent prestigious engagements have included the Chicago Blues Festival and The House of Blues Radio Hour, also in Chicago, which was syndicated nationwide.
Willie King continues to support his community through his non-profit organization The Rural Members Association, as well as blues education through his collaboration with the Alabama Blues Project.
