A New Deal for Carbon Hill, Alabama:
A Photographic Document by William C. Pryor
      http://newdeal.feri.org/carbonhill/

In 1938, William Pryor, the head of the WPA's Photographic Section,
documented the coal mining community of Carbon Hill, Alabama. This New Deal
Network feature includes 42 of Pryor's photographs and captions,
correspondence related to the Photographic Section's visit to Carbon Hill,
and a short introduction. "A New Deal for Carbon Hill, Alabama" documents
the successful utilization of New Deal projects and funds on the part of a
small, economically-strapped community, while recording the opinions of an
interesting cross-section of community members. The photo essay and
accompanying documents also demonstrate how the WPA's Division of
Information, in the documentary tradition of the 1930s, set about promoting
      Roosevelt's New Deal.

Last week Carbon Hill, Alabama, was devastated by a tornado, which destroyed
one-third of the town. This project is dedicated to the people of Carbon
      Hill.
