Call for Papers: William Bartram's Manuscripts: A Selection of Unpublished
Writings with Critical Essays.
Despite the importance of William Bartram to early national environmental
history and literature, scholarship tends to focus on his one book, Travels
in North and South Carolina, Georgia, East & West Florida, the Cherokee
Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges, or Creek Confederacy,
and the Country of the Chactaws (1791). This volume seeks to open new
opportunity for study by representing the full range of Bartram's writing
over the course of his long life.
The proposed volume will consist of two parts. Part One will offer a
representative sampling of unpublished writings by Bartram: for example, the
drafts to Travels, his philosophical essays, his weather journal, his
commonplace book, and selected correspondence. Part Two will include
interpretative essays that are paired with the primary manuscripts, showing
how scholars from different disciplines use these texts.
The editors, Nancy Hoffmann and Thomas Hallock, seek contributions from
scholars that are familiar with the Bartram archive. Please direct
inquiries and/or correspondence, by 1 December, to the addresses below:
