"Snow in the South is wonderful. It has a kind of magic and a mystery that
it has nowhere else. And the reason for this is that it comes to people in
the South not as the grim, unyielding tenant of Winter's keep, but as a
strange and wild visitor from the secret North." --Thomas Wolfe
Greetings, and a hearty welcome to our new subscribers. You're promised a
weekly newsletter, but oldtimers will tell you that's a bit of a fib. We
try, but we don't always make it.
So, here we are after a hiatus of a couple of weeks with lots of information
about new stories at USADEEPSOUTH.
Visit and enjoy these new articles:
Mississippi--The Second Time Around
by Bob Civin
Retired NYC editor Civin writes about his first trip to Mississippi in the
1964 Freedom Summer and the changes he found on his return trip years later.
My Rendezvous With Gene Hackman
by Beth Boswell Jacks
Jacks aspires to movie star status but abandons hope when Hackman leaves
her. Yep. Left her cold and shaking and miserable. Tough story.
by Carl Bartlett
Indiana Jones or Carl Bartlett? Not a bit of difference as Bartlett crawls
into danger to deliver 200 mothballs from the fangs of an anaconda.
A Visit To Charleston, SC
by Bettye R. Gibson
Wonderful article about Gibson's visit to Fort Sumter, site of the first
Civil War shots.
by Danny McBride
McBride, former lead singer and guitarist with SHA NA NA, tells us about
pretzels and Enron and his take on the whole thing. Funneee man.
Grits In The Sand
by Amanda Gilbert-Yazdani
Alabama girl moves to Abu Dhabi and gives us a description of her
adjustment. Great writing!
by Larry Pace
Larry Pace shares another wonderful story from his childhood. Two little
boys sneak through the woods and find a bunch of toughies tending a still.
Pace is quite a storyteller.
Also enjoy new stories from our archives by:
David Arthur Walters
Jim Goudelock . . .
Link of the week:
William Faulkner On The Web
From the University of Mississippi. Includes biography, list of films,
audio, bibliography, excerpts. Features a Faulkner QuickLink dropdown menu
Thanks, folks. Come see us often at USADEEPSOUTH, and send us your stories .
. . after the first of March. My files are still choking with submissions,
and I appreciate you all.
Pray for snow.
