Subject: Old Spanish Trail Across Alabama

      Dear Fellow Researchers:

I am currently researching the 1920s Old Spanish Trail (OST)
transcontinental highway between St. Augustine, FL, and San Diego, CA, that
crossed Alabama on what is now old US 90. I am inquiring whether any of
      your
historical societies or local archives may have information on this early
      private
      highway.

Though headquartered in San Antonio, TX, the OST Association had its first
meeting in Mobile in December of 1915, where the highway was conceived to
revive the city with a lateral connection to the east and west. Like many
other important towns along the OST, there was probably a great deal of
highway boosterism occurring during this period, with articles in
the newspapers proclaiming the anticipated benefits of the highway, and
often accompanied by the production of handsome tourist brochures and maps
      and
roadside markers. Any information on the Old Spanish Trail's historic and
current presence in Mobile and Alabama will be appreciated. Thank you.
