[Ritual Killing] German Cannibal confesses all
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5257-.html
A German man has confessed in court to killing and eating a willing victim,
saying it had felt like a religious act to eat human flesh. Offering a full
account of the killing that has gained him worldwide notoriety as "The
Cannibal of Rotenburg", Armin Meiwes said there were "hundreds, thousands"
of people seeking to fulfil their desires to eat humans or be eaten via
Internet adverts in forums called "Cannibal Cafe," "Guy Cannibals" and
"Torturenet". The trial of Meiwes, 42, started on Wednesday in the central
German city of Kassel, in a case that has shocked Germany, exposed the dark
side of the Internet and could make legal history. [...] Meiwes's lawyer
has pleaded for him to be convicted of "killing on request", a form of
illegal euthanasia which carries a far lower sentence of up to five years.
The problem, legal experts say, is that the charge of full murder is
unlikely to stick given that the video film shows the victim to be willing.

[Hate Groups : Scientology] Battlefield Broadway
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5256-.html
On the evening of Friday, Nov. 21, Reverend John Carmichael, the president
of the Church of Scientology’s New York chapter, attended a performance of A
Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Pageant, an Off Off Broadway
musical that is currently selling out the house at the Tank on West 42nd
Street. [...] The show’s Web site promises the "The inspirational story of
one teacher, author, explorer, atomic physicist, nautical engineer,
choreographer and horticulturalist named L. Ron Hubbard who motivated
millions—and made some as well," and—even before the show was mounted—this
description wasn’t much to the liking of Mr. Carmichael, who sent the show’s
producer, Aaron Lemon-Strauss, a letter on Nov. 5 that voiced his concern
over the possibility that the musical would "ridicule" Scientology. He
hadn’t been to rehearsals, but had seen that the musical’s Web site had
links to various articles and Web sites that denounced Hubbard and the
      Church.

NOTE: ""Scientology's own documents show an organization which is blatantly
commercial, blatantly secular and blatantly predatory, as well as blatantly
      fraudulent" - Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi.

[Mormon Church] ACLU adds LDS Church, mayor to plaza suit
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5255-.html
The ACLU has included the LDS Church in the group it is suing over the Main
Street Plaza resolution. The American Civil Liberties Union also
reintroduced Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson as a defendant in a filing
      Tuesday.

[Islam] New leader steps forward to revive Islamic group
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5254-.html
Three months after W. Deen Mohammed resigned from the Chicago-based American
Society of Muslims, a preacher from New Jersey has vowed to reconstitute the
group and accelerate the integration of its 1.5 million African-American
members into the country's broader Islamic community. Mustafa El-Amin, a
longtime Mohammed supporter and the imam of the Ibrahim mosque in Newark,
said Tuesday that he will make a formal announcement on Dec. 21 at Rutgers
University of his plan to revive the 28-year-old society. Leaders in the
group and Islamic experts said it is uncertain if El-Amin, who has
Mohammed's support, can revive the society. Since Mohammed's resignation in
late August, many imams have left the organization, and it is unclear if
they will return or form breakaway groups. [...]

[Polygamy] Convicted Utah polygamist's appeal invokes gay sex ruling
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5253-.html
A lawyer for a Utah man with five wives argued Monday that his bigamy
convictions should be thrown out following a Supreme Court decision
decriminalizing gay sex. The nation's high court in June struck down a
Texas sodomy law, ruling that what gay men and women do in the privacy of
their homes is no business of government. It's no different for
polygamists, argued Tom Green's attorney, John Bucher, to the Utah Supreme
      Court.

[Allen Harrod, et. al.] Folsom couple's sex trial begins
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5252-.html
The trial of a self-proclaimed prophet from Folsom accused of molesting his
children in rituals couched in religious doctrine began Monday with
testimony so explicit it drew a groan from one juror. Allen Rex Harrod, 56,
faces a potential life term if convicted of the 32 counts of child
molestation involving his sons, a daughter and the teenage daughter of a
friend entrusted to him for "religious training." Prosecutor Chris Ore told
jurors on Monday that Harrod was a "cult" leader, who forced his daughters
to perform sexual acts in order to win favor and advance in the family
      hierarchy.

[Hate Groups] Supremacist sues jail: Claims he was not allowed to practice
      religion
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5251-.html
A Joliet man convicted of armed robbery is suing the Will County jail for
not allowing him to practice his religion — the white supremacist church
founded by Matthew Hale. Derek Walsh, 21, is suing retired jail deputy
director David Simpson, former deputy director Nate Romeo and three jail
guards in federal court for preventing him from practicing "creativity,"
formerly known as the World Church of the Creator. Walsh wants $100 for
each day he was denied practicing his religion, plus $100 for each day he
was placed in solitary as punishment.

[Hate Groups : Scientology] State pulls plug on exhibit
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5250-.html
The Blagojevich administration Tuesday ordered the removal from the Thompson
Center of a controversial exhibit ridiculing psychiatry as a wicked
profession with ties to Nazi Germany after officials learned that the group
that erected the display was an offshoot of the Church of Scientology. The
group, which calls itself the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, agreed to
dismantle the exhibit under protest only one day after it had been set
up--with state permission--in the main atrium of the state office building
      in the Loop.

NOTE: The Citizens Commission on Human Rights is a front group for the
Scientology organization. Both are hate groups. Hate and harassment
activities are just two examples of the unethical behavior condoned and
      encouraged in Scientology's scriptures.

[Ritual Killing] German 'cannibal' goes on trial
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5248-.html
The trial is starting in Germany of a man accused of killing and eating
another man. Computer technician Armin Meiwes, 41, is charged with murder,
even though the victim allegedly volunteered for his fate by replying to an
internet advert. The gruesome incident was all captured on camcorder and
the video will form part of the evidence.

[Polygamy] Father's advocacy of polygamy casts shadow over custody dispute
      http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5247-.html
Tracey L. Roberts isn't trying to stop her ex-husband from pursuing his
religious belief in polygamy, the activity that broke up their marriage.
But she's dead set against him teaching their 10-year-old daughter Kaylynne
about it or exposing her to it in any way. [...] A York County judge in May
2002 granted Roberts and Stanley M. Shepp joint custody of Kaylynne,
directing that the girl continue to be raised in the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. In the same order, Common Pleas Judge Stephen P.
Linebaugh also prohibited Shepp from "teaching (Kaylynne) about polygamy,
plural marriages, or multiple wives," at least until she is 18. Shepp, 39,
took Linebaugh's restriction before the state Superior Court, which upheld
it. An appeal to the state Supreme Court is pending.
