      First International Conference

      GIS for the 21st Century

      Geographical Information Systems

      in the next Millennium

      6 - 8 July 1998, Udine, Italy

      Organised by
      Wessex Institute of Technology, UK
      and
      University of Udine, Italy

      Objectives

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies are rapidly
penetrating a number of application domains such as environmental
conservation, economical planning, resource utilisation, cartography,
urban planning, risk assessment, pollution control, transport
management systems and many others. Data acquisition facilities, data
base features, human interface capability and learning aids of GIS
Systems will be discussed during this conference. The Meeting will
also focus on the way in which GIS plays a decisive role linking
together economic development and environmental conservation planning
      through its own characterisitics.

One of the primary aims of the conference is therefore to identify the
GIS technology state of the art and to monitor its development in
various fields of application. This will ensure that GIS continues
to develop into a tool for virtual management systems in the next
      millennium.

Papers presented at the meeting will describe solutions to increase
the quality of GIS. Participants will be encouraged to demonstrate
their own software and applications. The Conference aims to bring
together researchers in academia and industry as well as land use
planners and technology network managers who are concerned with the
study of GIS problems and applications. The meeting will act as an
interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of problems of common
      interest.

      CONFERENCE CHAIRMEN

      Prof C A Brebbia
      Wessex Institute of Technology, UK

      Prof P Pascolo
Universita degli Studi di Udine, Italy

      CONFERENCE SPONSORS

The conference will be supported by the Commission for Risk Protection
(Assessorato alla Protezione Civile) of the Regione Friuli Venezia
      Giulia.

      CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers are invited on the topics indicated and others falling within
the scope of the conference. Three copies of an abstact of no more
than 300 words, clearly stating the purpose, results and conclusion of
the work to be described in the final paper should be submitted to the
Conference Secretariat as soon as possible and no later than 4
November 1997. The camera-ready manuscript of the final full length
paper will need to be received by 17 February 1998 and final
acceptance will depend on the full length paper. Please tick the
most relevant topic to your abstract.

The conference will be held at the University of Udine, Italy from 6
      - 8 July 1998. Udine is located in the North-Eastern part of Italy,
not far from Venice and Trieste. Legend states that Udine's castello
is sited on a mound erected by Attila the Hun's warriors (the soil
being transported in their helmets) in order that he could watch the
burning of Aquileia. Udine flourished in the middle-ages being an
ideal location for trade routes and became the capital of the Friuli
