    FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT and CALL FOR PAPERS The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, ISPRS, and the African Association for Remote Sensing

      The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, ISPRS, and
      the African Association for Remote Sensing of the Environment, AARSE, in
      conjunction with the National Center for Remote Sensing, CENATEL, Benin are
      inviting to an international symposium with the theme

      " Promoting Space Technology Transfer and Geomatics Education in Africa"

      to be held in Cotonou, Benin from the 6th to 9th December 1999

      The symposium is the first ever ISPRS event in Benin and one of the first on
      the continent. It aims to advance expertise related to ISPRS and Geomatics
      in Africa by bringing together African and International experts in an
      African context and through the discussion of technology transfer and
      education issues. The specific objectives of the symposium are

      1. Assessment of the situation of education in Africa
      2. Establishment of effective and sustainable education and training
      networks in Africa towards improved education
      3. Remote learning and computer assisted education
      4. Identification of support structures for education and networking in Africa
      5. Informing educators and practitioners on latest developments in relevant
      6. Investigation of opportunities for joint projects
      7. Strengthening of links between Francophone and Anglophone African
      Geomatics experts and institutions

      Papers on the above topics including overview papers on latest developments
      in areas relevant to ISPRS and Geomatics are invited. Extended abstracts of
      250 to 300 words can be submitted to Luigi Mussio ( E-mail:
      luigi@... or Fax +39 02 23996530) by 30th April 1999.
      Papers may be written and presented in French or English. Authors will be
      notified regarding the acceptance of papers by 15th June and the final
      versions of the papers have to be submitted in hardcopy form and, where
      possible, in digital format by 15th October.
