The symposium will deal with the theme of modeling landscape in different
scales and addressing information on landscape functions to landscape
units. It is awaited to show how these models work and which functions they
can explain. Special attention is given to land use as a steering factor of
landscape ecological processes. The symposium will be focussed on the
handling of heterogeneity in landscapes by methods of regionalization.
It is aimed to bring together theoretical approaches as well as applied
case studies for an interesting mixture of lectures which could be
contributed to the possible following sub-themes. The reports should try to
      give answers to the questions:

Problems of scale and hierarchy in landscape ecology
      ---------------------------------------------------
What properties of physical and human systems are invariant with respect
      to scale?
What kinds of transformation of scale are available, to aggregate or
      disaggregate data?
What are the problems that must be overcome in integrating data from
      different scales?
How is the observation of processes affected by changes of scale, and how
can we measure the degree to which processes are manifested at different
      scales?
How is scale represented in the parametrization of process models, and
how are models affected by the use of data from inappropriate scales?

Diversity and heterogeneity in landscape patterns and processes
      ---------------------------------------------------------------
How can landscape diversity be described, measured and assessed?
How can diversity of cultured landscapes be modeled?

      Indicators of landcape functions
      ---------------------------------
How can field measurements of landscape functions, as for instance
transport functions, be replaced by suitable indicators in larger scales?
Which parameters can be used as indicators for structures and processes
to make field work more efficiently?

Land use as steering factor for landscape structures and processes
      ---------------------------------------------------
How do land use processes influence landscape pattern and function?
Is land use the most important factor for creating landscape structures
      (examples of urban areas)?

Landscape research on different scales - practical questions of landscape
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------
      management
      ----------
Which level of investigation is necessary to model different types of
      landscape functions?
What are typical practical questions with regard to scale?
What are the most suitable scales of research for specific practical
      problems?

Abstract submission: Abstracts should be submitted directly to the above
named addresses, prevered by e-mail. The deadline for receipt of abstracts
is (depart from the congress rules) 1 April 1999. This procedure doesn't
influence the registration formalities. Besides oral presentations results
can be presented on posters too.
