      Surely that should come straight out of your market research? That's the stuff that's particular to your customers. Anything else will likely be much more general.

      I work for a company that sells web hosting products and is very development driven not market and customer focused (which we are working on changing).  Thus, the belief is that our customers are command line proficient and a new product delivered only through the command line will be be acceptable. 


      From my market and customer research this is not the case even those who are command line proficient would like a GUI option to accomplish this rather complex task.


      I am looking to create a few simple use cases to be included into a presentation to the sr leadership team to help show them that this "techi" (documented and command line only) product version will not be enough - there must be a GUI included in the requirements.

      Hello Andrea,

      I've never seen an authority on this kind of classification, and frankly, for myself I gave up trying to classify users by technical proficiency a long time ago -- but I work mostly on commercial web sites where the full audience is acutally "almost everybody"

      I have two follow up questions for you:

      1. What is the purpose of the classification? Are you looking to recruit participants for testing or write up personas, or create a pivot table to analyze log files or something else.

      2. What is the specific nature of the question you are eventually trying to answer? Do you want to decide whether the application should be command line only? command line and gui? Or, are you trying to see if people who love command lines can get through a task on a gui... or something else?

      There are many other questions I could ask, but the answer to those two will help the group focus answers back you. I myself am "command line capable" but am proficient with the Mac or Windows GUI, so there is a lot of nuance in your simple question.
