Group Description

Africanus

"Hostes were organised enemies of the state: to a Classical Roman, the Gauls, the Carthaginians and the Dacians were hostes - they were organised, coherent and invariably foreign enemies who could be lumped together under one definition. The reality was certainly far more sophisticated - the Romans had little appreciation for subdivisions and tribal identities amongst the people they conquered or who tried to conquer them. A general term, if inaccurate, was, nevertheless, useful insofar as it focused popular aggression and gave rise to countless personal epithets (Africanus etc.) for conquering generals."

"Proconsul is one of the best represented Miocene hominoid in the fossil record. It lived from approximately 23 to 14 million years ago. From the full arrray of remains it has been shown that there was considerable variation in this genus. Body sizes ranged from that of a small monkey (10 pounds) to that of a female gorilla (150 pounds). They also inhabited a wide range of environmental niches."

"Scipio was the elder son of Publius Cornelius Scipio, praetor and consul, by his wife Pomponia, who was apparently of a prominently knightly and plebeian family. Scipio was known to have visited the temple daily as he took dreams about gods and omens seriously. He is also thought to have consulted with, or at least informed his mother before deciding to run for curule aedile, the most junior magistrate who was entitled to enter the Senate. Scipio ran for this office at the age of 24. His younger brother was Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus. Little else is known about his childhood."
