This Kuumba musical event features Kemer Yousef for the first time in Toronto since his tour of Ethiopia, returning to the country a musical celebrity after fleeing there 24 years ago. Kemer's coheadliner is Daniel Nebiat, an innovative krar player whose multidimensional style has seen him play at profile Toronto African musical events and festivals as well as at the weekly Wavelength music series and for the CBC. This event highlights their music and the music of the African region they are from.
Horn of Africa: A Musical Odyssey is part of Kuumba at Harbourfront Centre and is produced in partnership with Batuki Music. The Horn of Africa is one of the most significant areas in the African continent in terms of its rich ancient history and traditions. The krar (a five or six stringed lyre-like instrument) and the mesenko (a one stringed fiddle) are among the oldest instruments in the world. This concert recreates the traditions of the region's musical poets by featuring two popular singers with their accompanying musicians. These singers have both achieved recognition for their music in their communities in Canada, Europe and Africa.
