Here's a list of recommended CDs that were released in 2007. Stern's Music is offering a special exclusive discount to Africa Kabisa listeners for titles on their label. (See below for full details.)  You can also find this music at www.panafricanallstars.com, www.amazon.com, www.calabashmusic.com, www.cdbaby.com, and other sources.

      Africa Kabisa
      Best of 2007
      1a. Tabu Ley Rochereau -- Voice of Lightness -- Stern's -- (DRC)
Essential -- not merely recommended -- for all African music lovers. This double CD box set showcases Rochereau's golden voice with much loved favorites and lesser known gems from 1961 - 1977
      1b. Mbilia Bel -- Bel Canto -- Stern's -- (DRC)
Just released in November 2007! This 2-CD box set shines the spotlight on the queen of Congolese music with recordings made for Rochereau's Genidia label from 1982 - 1987. Includes such classics as Eswi Yo Wapi, Kelhia, and more.
      2. Atisole -- Tropical Breeze -- Cliffmizik -- (Haiti)
Africa Kabisa listeners, especially fans of Coupe Cloue and twoubadou, go crazy every time I play this phenomenal CD. Look for it at your local Haitian music stores, such as M&S Beauty Supply in Somerville, MA
      3. Madilu System -- La Bonne Humeur -- Stern's -- (DRC)
Madilu, one of the most revered Congolese singers, died shortly after the release of this superb CD. His final release does justice to his musical legacy and the TPOK Jazz tradition.
      4. Various Artists -- Colombia! Golden Age of Discos Fuentes -- Soundway -- (Colombia)
Superb collection of 1960s and 1970s Colombian cumbia and salsa from the legendary Discos Fuentes label. This CD was a favorite of many DJs at WMBR.
      5. Tinariwen -- Aman Iman: Water Is Life -- World Village / Harmonia Mundi -- (Mali)
Tuareg music with an edgy electrified soul
      6. Shiko Mawatu -- Kimbanda Nzila -- Tabilulu -- (DRC)
Contemporary Congolese rumba at its best
      7. Colombiafrica -- Voodoo Love Inna Champeta Land -- Riverboat -- (Colombia / DRC)
Collaboration between Afro-Colombian champeta stars from Palenque (Justo Valdez, Viviano Torres, Luis Towers) and Congolese soukous wizards (Bopol Mansiamina, Dally Kimoko, Diblo Dibala, Caen Madoka, Rigo Star, plus Nyboma)
      8. Djelimady Tounkara & Super Rail Band -- Alla Bamako -- Sheer -- (Mali)
Great retrospective of 1970s and 1980s material with some unusual tracks that mix in the funk with Tounkara's virtuoso guitar
      9. Various Artists -- Bachata Roja -- Iaso -- (Dominican Republic)
Wonderful collection of acoustic bachata from the 1960s - 1980s
      10. Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loka -- Isabela -- Mopiato -- (DRC)
LA-based Lemvo continues his Congo-Cuba fusion explorations with stylistic variation and flair
We mourn the loss and honor the memory of those who passed this year:
Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe (Nigeria), Madilu System (DRC), Laba Sosseh (Senegal), Lucky Dube (South Africa), Benoit Mudymba (DRC / Boston)
