The second week of January is early for the world music event of the year, but globalFEST is almost always that for me.  globalFEST will be held Sunday, January 10, 2010 (yikes, 2010!!!!) on 3 stages at Webster Hall, NYC.

A dozen artists representing a broad range of musical and cultural traditions.  You’ll hear gorgeous ballads and kick-ass dance music, traditionalists and hyphenates, romantics and social critics, styles you know and love and styles you can’t even describe even after you’ve heard the whole set.  There’s nothing like going from room to room on the three floors of Webster Hall, finding another musical revelation around every corner. All for a very friendly price that we’ve kept the same for 7 years running.

Don’t worry if you don’t know some of the names on this year’s line-up; that’s the case every year, and this year, 4 artists will make their us debut and one their NY debut at globalFEST.  But a few years from now, you’ll think fondly back to when you saw the show that helped put one or another of these artists on the map and help them on their path to world music stardom.  Some are already stars in their own parts of the world – Caravan Palace are Platimum artists in France and will make their US debut this night; Cedric Watson is one of the stars of Southwestern Louisiana, receiving his second Grammy nomination yesterday for best Zydeco Artist; Francois Ladrezo is a cultural icon back home in Guadeloupe; Federico Aubele has toured with artists ranging from Thievery Corporation (he’s on their ESL label) as well as Diana Krall, Cara Dillon is one of Ireland’s pre-eminent singers.  You’ll also hear some of the hottest emerging stars from right here in NYC, like La Excelencia, the heir designates to salsa stars like Eddie Palmieri and El Gran Combo,  the Senegalese reggae sensation Meta & the Cornerstones, and Colombian roots purveyors la Cumbiamba eNeYe.  You’ll hear more about other artists in emails to come, but in the meantime, check the links below to learn more about these artists.

It’s likely that many of these artists will grace the stages of world music festivals, concert halls or nightclubs near you sometime in the next few years – globalFEST is timed to coincide with the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters annual conference (APAP), when Artistic Directors from around the country and around the globe come to discover the artists they’ll program for coming seasons.  And New Yorkers reap the benefits of being able to see all these great artists in one place.

With the holidays just around the corner, why not share this night of musical discoveries with your loved ones.  globalFEST tickets make great gifts.  But make sure you get tix for yourself too. Please help spread the word and forward to a friend, too.  Forward to a friend
