Hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend.  We took the rare opportunity to have a few night's with no shows, to get charged for the fall.  Seems like I have never escaped that back-to-school feeling that everything starts in September - maybe it's because of Rosh Hashanah, maybe it's because I'm a Virgo, but the fall always seems like a time of rebirth for me.

A couple of great ways to ease the transition from summer into fall coming.  First, Fabian Alsultany, Derek Beres and I will be back together this Friday night for the final of this year's GlobeSonic Sound System Sunset Sessions in Riverside Park with the Body Temple Drummers.  We got rained out last month, so make sure you come out for this great FREE party right on the water as the sun is setting over the Hudson.  Remember, this is an early party and a great way to start off your weekend with a beautiful crowd that ranges from dayglow Burning Man ravers to wheelchair-defying grannies to toddlers to you.  And afterwards you can come on down to Joe's Pub for an afterparty with Karsh Kale and his live band.

Just a final moment to acknowledge the passing of one of the people who made the NYC scene what it is, Hilly Kristal - a true pioneer in allowing artists to use a nightclub a springboard for changing worldwide music history.  So many bands that changed my life got their start at CBGB's - he'll be missed.

      SONIDO CHANGORAMA

Formed in 1907 by David Somellera and Zaratustra Vazquez ( poets and videomakers ), Sonido Changorama is an experimental-cumbia sonidero band. From within the depths of musical & literary cynicism, they reduce current and historical events of Mexico and the World, to a rhythm surroundeded with profane verses, ritual and electric sounds, absurdism and play. Cumbia y patria!, shouts Sonido Changorama, just a year short of its centennial celebration, from their trance-twisted instruments in the heat of the capital postaztec city.

      PETRA HADEN
Petra Haden and her occasional cohorts in The Sellouts make wonderfully unclassifiable music: Their music is so varied that one category can't suffice. Haden mixes classical, jazz, blues, rock, folk and pop, often performing some unusual combination a cappella. The daughter of legendary jazz musician Charlie Haden, Petra Haden began playing violin to imitate Captain Kangaroo, and rediscovered the instrument at age 20. She soon honed her voice to imitate the violin and other instruments, and joined the cultishly admired band That Dog, which received well-received albums throughout the '90s. Haden still performs covers of everything from "Thriller" to Bach's Prelude No. 2, and her latest album is an a cappella re-working of The Who Sell Out, which features only her voice...

Noir rock legends Elysian Fields carry a torch for nature, sex, love, the cycle of death and rebirth, and the sounds of folk and jazz ballads, no wave and classical music, seamlessly interwoven into a style that is at once langorously romantic and tough. LLOYD COLE

A solo show by Lloyd Cole, "one of the most articulate and acute songwriters of the postpunk era." (All Music Guide) Cole swept the UK with The Commotions in the mid '80's, followed by acclaimed solo records and singularly literate pop gems with his band The Negatives. His previous US release Music in a Foreign Language (One Little Indian), featured his trademark sharp and insightful songwriting and showcases his heartfelt and cinematic songs about bittersweet love. His latest album, Anti-Depressant, finds him in unexpectedly optimist frame of mind – at least until the overwhelming finale of ‘Rolodex Incident’ brings him back to earth...
