I can't imagine a better week of music in NYC than what's coming up, both here at Joe's Pub and elsewhere (can you say Manu Chao, Lagbaja, Kekele and more at Celebrate Brooklyn?!?)

First, a correction - for those of you who actually DID save the date - this Friday August 4 - for the next free GlobeSonic party at Riverside Park South - I was wrong.  It got moved to a month from now - Friday, September 8.  Besides, it's too damn hot.  So save the new date for the next time Acidophilus, Fabian and Derek tagteam along with the Body Temple drummers in a free sunset session.  The last party was amazing fun - Hassan Hakmoun sat in with us on percussion, dancers from ages 3 to 73 were out in full force.  It was a beautiful time. www.globesonic.com for info.

Tonight, NOMO, a killer Afrobeat group out of Detroit that my friend Ismael from Concert of Colors turned me onto about a year ago finally play here, with a new CD on the excellent Ubiquity label. Yesterday was the anniversary of Fela's passing; tonight will be a great way to honor his legacy with a young band that has put their own jazzy spin on the sound he pioneered.  Also want to recommend you mark your calendar for August 16, the anniversary of the passing of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan when we honor his legacy with a double bill featuring Brooklyn's own Brook's Qawwali Party and Paula Jeanine's American Ghazal.

A few of our shows are completely completely sold out - Hazel Dickens & Will Oldham, tonight's Onion Comedy series kick-off, flamenco/Metallica fusionists Rodrigo y Gabriela, Ari Hest, the early Constantine show (a few tix still left for his 11:30 set), so you may need to content yourself with checking out the free mp3's below.

You WILL NOT WANT TO MISS this Tuesday's show by Lenine, who I have said is my favoirte songwriter to emerge from Brazil since Caetano and Gil, and who I've been trying to have play at Joe's Pub since I brought him to see Karsh Kale about 5 years ago, before I even worked here.  But don't just take my word for it.  Check out the previews in The New Yorker (with illustration last week), NY Times this past Sunday, Time Out and New York Press this week....and he'll be on WFUV on Tuesday morning.  Both shows WILL sell out. Probably before the weekend.  Don't sleep on this.  And if you want a sneak preview of his funk/rock fueled mix, check out this free podcast from SXSW http://www.theworld.org/globalhits/sxsw2006.shtml (also check out our good friends Auktyon from Russia, 127 from Iran, and Cambodian-American indie pysch-rockers Dengue Fever, who will make their NY debut at Joe's Pub in September).

I'll let you keep reading below to hear about all the other exciting shows coming up here, new shows confirmed etc etc etc.   See you soon. and wish a happy birthday to Mr. Tofu Hut if you see him.

"As a musician, Darrell Scott is an A-list multi-instrumentalist who has performed on countless albums and toured with Guy Clark, Tim O'Brien and Sam Bush. As a songwriter, he's scored over 70 cuts, been named Songwriter of the Year by ASCAP and the National Songwriters Association, and garnered two Grammy nominations. Scott's earthy, elastic vocals remain an underrated treat, and the playing by all hands is superb, this boy sure can deliver the goods."
       - No Depression

Darrell Scott is a powerful musical spirit. A Grammy-nominated artist, an award-winning songwriter, and a first-call session musician, living and working on the fringes of Nashville's Music Row, Scott occupies his own unique half-acre in this city's crowded musical landscape. In a town that's got pigeonholing down to an art, Darrell Scott stands out as a refreshingly mischievous artist. The Invisible Man, Scott's sixth release, finds the artist at the peak of his powers, drawing from a rich well of influence and experience to create his most fully realized work to date. The Invisible Man traces a thematic arc between waking and sleeping, living and dying, shining a brilliant light on the fleeting moments between.

"A moving and nuanced feast for lovers of great songwriting that thrives in live performance for its wit, insight, and glowing humanity."
       - Billboard

Mary Lee's Corvette is headed by gifted singer/songwriter/guitarist Mary Lee Kortes, who has been called "one of the most compelling voices in modern rock." In 2002, Mary Lee's Corvette scored a surprise hit with Blood on the Tracks, a typically fearless song-for-song reinterpretation of Bob Dylan's 1975 classic of the same name. While the Dylan-inspired disc helped to substantially expand Mary Lee's Corvette's audience, longtime observers recognized the irony, since it's the artfully crafted, deeply felt original compositions of Mary Lee Kortes-MLC's founder, lead singer and sole charter member-that have long been the band's calling card. Indeed, Kortes' original songs survey thorny emotional territory with depth and nuance, as well as a classic pop sensibility that lends buoyancy to her lyrics' darker insights.

"It's only one album, but this record places NOMO rather firmly near the head of an emerging pack of Afrobeat revival bands. It's a good bet that anyone who digs Ted Sirota's Soul Rebels will love this, given the emphasis on jazz, and naturally, there's the affinity with Fela, so Afrobeat and Afro-jazz afficionados are encouraged to give a listen. Anyone else who just wants to dance can come along, too."
       - Pitchfork

On NOMO's new album, New Tones, home-made Detroit electronics and huge horn sections blast big band funk and riotous jazz. NOMO's roots are firmly planted in the fertile soil of African polyrhythm and American free jazz, and bandleader Elliot Bergman's tracks draw inspiration from cultures and generations wildly different than his home setting. In many ways (at least geographically and sonically) NOMO are a distant relative of the TRIBE collective. Undoubtedly they carry the spirit of the legendary Detroit-label's other-worldly creative output.

        SAT, AUG 5 at 7:00 + 9:30
        SUN, AUG 6 at 4:00 + 6:30
A unique concert featuring two exceptional figures in American music, Hazel Dickens and Will Oldham, marking the first time the two have shared a bill since they both appeared in John Sayles' 1987 film "Matewan." The songbook of Hazel Dickens, born in the coal fields of West Virginia in 1935, fuses old-time mountain music, the glory days of bluegrass, and an unapologetic feminism and progressivism, making her a radical traditionalist in the truest sense. She is one of the most identifiable voices in country music today, sharing a place in the pantheon of living legends with the likes of Doc Watson and Dr. Ralph Stanley.  Bonny Billy (Will Oldham) has been making his own singular brand of American music for nigh on 15 years under a bevy of monikers - Palace Brothers, Palace Music, and Bonnie Prince Billy. Tonight he plays a rare set of traditional material with his brother Ned, frontman of the Baltimore-based folk-rock band The Anomoanon.

This concert marks the closing of Brooklyn Fire Proof's "FOLK" installation - a show showcasing the folklorist Alan Lomax's work documenting and preserving America's traditional music. Through photographs, recordings, films, and writings Lomax expressed his commitment to the principle of "cultural equity," which he believed should take a place among the fundamental principles of political, social, and economic justice.
Presented in association with Stepstone / Brooklyn Fire Proof.
