JOE'S PUB with Spencer Day, David Berkeley / Chris Trapper, Amina, Jake Shimabukuro, Amanda Palmer, Barb Jungr plus much, much more!
- Keeping this really brief...read below about all the great stuff coming up. Just a special note for all of you not interested in the Super Bowl this weekend about Barb Jungr. She is a truly unique singer, the kind of interpreter who can take a song that you've heard a gazillion times before, in this case by Elvis Preseley, and actually cause you to actually listen them for the first time. She gets inside the lyrics like few other singers I've heard. Check her out.On the DJ front, I'll be spinning a party one week from Friday at the Brooklyn Lyceum for friends of Celebrate Brooklyn, NYC's best outdoor concert series (Joe's Pub in the Park excluded, of course). I will have the honor, and challenge, of following Rhythm Revue's legendary DJ Felix Hernandez as well as Joe's Pub friend DJ Scribe. Expect a global set that dips deep into the funkier side of things. I'll be wrapping it up at around midnight - 2 am, after I check out Emeline Michel and DanceNow's performances here at the Pub. Mama Say, Mama Sa Mama Massoka...And those parents among you, don't forget, our next family matinee is coming up with Brady Rymer at 12 noon on Feb 12.

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW 2/2 - DAVID BERKELEY / CHRIS TRAPPER of The Push Stars
Passionate Pop Singer-Songwriters
THURS, FEB. 2
The New York Times writes, "David Berkeley sings in a lustrous melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake. As his melodies ascend to become benedictions and consolations, the music shimmers and peals." The Atlanta-based songwriter received ASCAP's coveted Johnny Mercer Songwriting Award, and his song "Fire Sign" was featured on CBS-TVs "Without a Trace." His latest CD/DVD "Live from Fez" was released last fall.
The Push Stars inspire passionate responses from lovers of hooky, melodic modern rock.
"...Classic pop perfection" raves The New York Times, while The Boston Globe adds, "rocks with an uncommon glee and breezy intelligence." Songwriter Chris Trapper's stunning, hook-filled, plaintive tales burrow deep into people's lives with an understanding of classic pop melody that is organic and highly infectious -- his lyrics are accessible but never easy, smart but never clever, honest but never pandering. "...a lively, expertly crafted composite of rock,...with radio-hit potential too great to measure, The Push Stars' endless melodies are hard to shake." ~ CMJ New Music Report
TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW 2/3 - DOVEMAN / NICO MUHLY
Rapturous 'Insomnia Pop' with Outstanding Young Composer/Performer
FRI, FEB. 3
Doveman plays lamp rock and insomnia pop, drawing deeply from downtown jazz, new classical, slowcore, debonair '60s pop, and ambient music to create an unusual and delicate sound that The New York Press says "evokes that rare moment when nostalgia and sadness meets love." Time Out New York once remarked that Doveman singer Thomas Bartlett "often sounds as if he's on the brink of passing out from heartache fumes," but Doveman's music isn't about fainting but rather the rapturous swoon which precedes it. Doveman's debut record, The Acrobat, is reminiscent of downbeat masters of melancholy like Nick Drake, Before and After Science-era Eno, and the latter-day Talk Talk, and the music has the unmistakable ring of pre-dawn loneliness, as intimate as it is forlorn. The band features some of New York's finest musicians, including Thomas Bartlett (Elysian Fields, Chocolate Genius), Dougie Bowne (Iggy Pop, Lounge Lizards), Shahzad Ismaily (Tom Waits, Marc Ribot), Sam Amidon (Stars Like Fleas) and Peter Ecklund (Madeleine Peyroux, Loudon Wainwright III).
Having graduating from Julliard in 2004 with a Masters in composition, Nico Muhly has orchestrated film scores for Rachel Portman and Philip Glass, collaborated with Bjork on her album Medulla, and with Antony, of Antony and the Johnsons, conducting a chamber orchestra and Antony in a performance in Holland this past year. His 30-minute song cycle based on Strunk & White's Elements of Style which was performed at the NY Public Library has received rave reviews and is currently being recorded. Nico's album of original music, Speaks Volumes, will be released in March 2006 on Icelandic label, Bedroom Community/Bad Taste. "..this was active, refreshing, original music, engaging in its timbres, and penetrating far beyond mere text setting or tone painting to stand up to its poetry." - New York Times

SOLD OUT 2/4 - MARK ERELLI, MARK GEARY and JOHN FRANCIS
Divergent Singer-Songwriter Trio
SAT, FEB. 4
Ever since his debut at 24 years old, Mark Erelli has exhibited an uncommon musical maturity. In a few short years, he's got four albums to his name, over 500 concerts under his best, and multiple awards. During a time when most young artists are still searching for their own voices, he has quietly build one to the most impressive and varied reputations in modern roots music. On his latest album, Hillbilly Pilgrim, an entire album of western swing originals, Mark immerses himself in vintage twang without abandoning his contemporary sensibility and the heartfelt thoughtful lyrics of folk. "Hillbilly Pilgrim does Western Swing proud, as it's brimming over with wry, heartfelt songcraft, invigorating tempos, and pedal-steel guitar dazzling as an Arizona sunset...Erelli has crafted a near-perfect album." - Paste Magazine --- New

York-based Irishman Mark Geary, a recent finalist in Disc Makers Independent Music World series started out playing with Jeff Buckley. Since then he has launched a successful solo career. His latest Signature Sounds release "Ghosts" has brought him to the forefront of the singer-songwriter scene and his live performances promis to keep him there. "His delicate songs about love and defiance...recall Richard Thompson and John Lennon." - Time Out NY ---
John Francis' passionate performances and eloquent songwriting have recently drawn comparisons to U2's Bono, Jeff Buckley, Bruce Springsteen, and Dylan. It is not imitation that has received attention. It is John Francis' distinctive voice, lyrically and melodically, that captures his listeners and fans. "...whether he's finding the grace in ordinary moments, or sharing his perspective on the struggles of the day, John Francis makes music that captures life in all its minutia and majesty." -The Intelligencer

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW 2/5 - BARB JUNGR: Love Me Tender - An Uncharted Journey Into the King's Legacy
Dramatic Chanson Renditions of Presley Classics
SUN, FEB. 5
Britain's Queen of chansons and European cabaret, often referred to as "A British Piaf" and "Britain's answer to Juliette Greco," Barb Jungr sings the works of none other than the King of rock and roll with extraordinary passion and commitment. Following her January 2004 Joe's Pub performance, Stephen Holden of the New York Times proclaimed, "she digs beneath the songwriter's chameleon persona to ferret out a song's emotional core, and what she discovers can be revelatory." David Finkle of Backstage is another fan, raving: "Were someone twisting my arm to nominate the most important new act I've seen this year, I'd blurt out Barb Jungr... [her CD] only hints at her onstage brilliance. She's the best kind of actor because she thrives on taking risks - on knowing the rules and when to break them. A spontaneous, perfect set." Her latest CD on Linn Records, Love Me Tender has already received much critical acclaim. Don't miss this chance to see the Queen taking over the Kingdom. "She had me weeping. Elvis lives - in glitter and black heels". --The Scotsman
