I wish all of you a wonderful 2006, filled with love, peace, joy, and music and art of all kinds.

We can help on the music and arts front - read below for info about lots of special shows.  Please note that Dion's show is COMPLETELY sold out - (you may be able to get tix to see him at housing Works the next day), and the afterparty on Monday night, with members of the Raveonettes spinning is open to the public.  No plans for live music at that party, in case you were wondering....Heeb's Storytelling and R. Star tonight are also both close to selling out - get tix online or over the phone because chances are you'll be shut out at the door. Ditto goes for Monday's show with Daphne Rubin-Vega.

We just released additional tix for globalFEST on Saturday night - both shows are selling extremely quickly, and press is about to start kicking into high gear, so don't wait - get your tix for either or both nights now.  And thanks to Beleza Pura cachaca, there will be some great caipirinha and other drink specials in all the bars now too!

Also this week, I am particularly excited about Sunday night's NY debut of The Syn - a band that Chris Squire was in with Steve Nardilli and others prior to joining YES.  We just found out that Alan White, Yes' drummer, has just been added to the bill.  It's a rare opportunity to discover a band that bridges early mod psychedelia and prog rock and witness a US debut tour over 30 years in the making. You can check out musical samples of them, and many other Joe's Pub artists, on our website or by clicking links below. And of course this Friday, Pub fave  psychedelic Sufi rocker sufi  Haale, and a new band called The New Standards with members of The Suburbs  and SemiSonic and Trip Shakespeare, performing swinging new takes on songs by The Replacements, Beck and, naturally, "Inchworm" from Hans Christian Anderson.

Chanukah is over, and so we can't extend Jackie Hoffman any longer.  A handful of tickets are available for her final shows on Jan 7 and 15th, and then the runaway holiday hit MUST CLOSE.  Get tix while you still can.

Next week the IAJE (Jazz Educators coverence) is in town, followed shortly thereafter by the Arts Presenters conference, so you'll see lots of really special performances over the next few weeks.  Check the schedule below to find out about upcoming shows by Allen Toussaint, whose sold out show before New Years' was astounding, and now starts his monthly benefit brunch series (discounts for children under 12 too!); outlaw country legend Bobby Bare Sr. (featured in the current issue of the Village Voice, though they forgot to mention the show....); Howard Fishman reuninting his orginal quartet for a special Cd release show, a night of Indo-jazz with Canada's Autorickshaw, and NYC's Indo-Pak Ensemble with Rudresh Mahanthappa and Rez Abassi, three-time Grammy nominee Luciana Souza, 2 Foot Yard (with Tin Hat's Carla Kihlstedt) ,Claudia Acuna, Burnt Sugar, Imani Uzuri, Robert Glasper, So Percussion with Matmos (the laptop duo who collaborated with Bjork on Vespertine) and a just added late night show with globalFESt and Joe's Pub alum Susheela Raman.

That's about it for now.  See you at the Pub soon.
      Forward to a friend

      THE NEW STANDARDS
      FRI, JAN. 6
      7:30
John Munson of Trip Shakespeare/Semisonic fame, Chan Poling, founder of the haute-punk new-wave group The Suburbs, and Steve Roehm, vibraphonist extraordinaire, got together with a plan to play and sing their favorite songs - naked. Well, the musicians are clothed, but the aesthetic is raw simplicity, communication and soul. The song selections span the twentieth century. Each song must be someone's favorite and each arrangement must bring something new to the song. In an age of digital overkill, The New Standards keep the instrumentation simple. Poling on piano, Roehm on vibraphone and Munson on double bass. Chan and John split the singing. If that's not enough, a footstomp here, a shout-out, a fiery solo, and it's cooked. Simple, elegant, illuminating. "One of the most fun new bands around" -Minneapolis Star Tribune.

      FRI, JAN. 6

NY-born vocalist Haale and her band create an exaltative experience onstage, weaving Persian melodies through a lush soundscape that pays homage to both Sufi musical tradition and 60's psychedelia.   Though she sings mostly in Persian, the music speaks all languages, loudly passionately, defiantly.  '[Along with Sigur Ros and Gigi, one of 15 world artists sure to make big waves in the future...This genre-bending seamstress will make you see stars while ascending to her own." GLOBAL RHYTHM    With Pete Van Nostrand, Shahzad Ismaily, Shane Shanahan, and, Dougie Bowne.  To hear tracks from the upcoming album, mixed by Tchad Blake, go to www.haale.com.

Marlo Marron returns to Joe's Pub again, after three successful shows in the past year and half.  Tonight she will leave behind the eclectic sounds from her first album, Blind Pony, and share with us songs from her second album.  Her new original tunes, recorded in NYC at Loho Studios, are solidly rooted in folk and rock, with raw and honest vocals.  The combination of simple and emotional sounds create a vulnerable breathtaking mix.  Having grown up amongst musical legends inside recording studios (Electric Lady & Record Plant) her influences are vast.  Marlo will play and perform tonight with her usual crew of awesome musicians; Mark Brotter, Bobby Gagnon, Charlie Giardano, Stuffy Shmitt, and Charles Torres.

On his new release, Other People's Stuff (Realistic Records), Shmitt delivers an upbeat and thoroughly enjoyable musical journey of fourteen cover tunes, expertly spanning decades and genres. Shmitt's understanding and respect for the songwriting process is clearly evident, shining through in his production, musical arrangements, mixes and vocal performances.  Through his production choices on Other People's Stuff, Shmitt pays tribute to the original songwriters and performers of the tunes, while at the same time putting his personal thumbprint on the work, making it fresh and undeniably his own. His lush vocals and top-notch guitar playing make the CD timeless and infinitely listenable. The CD possess the warmth of the past, yet manages to be thoroughly modern. "Stuffy Shmitt's "Other People's Stuff" is the best album you've never heard of...On this album, the singer/guitarist trips through modern music in an unusual compilation of cover songs that showcase his gritty, manly voice." - NY Post
