- Dec 20, 2011I totally agree. I don’t even like using disk images other than for archive purposes! However, the solid-state approach could help Jerome who has a corrupted Winchester and a dead FDD.I’d be interested to hear what things you tried around 10 years ago when attempting to repair the heads? Did you try just taking heads from a more modern drive?
I'm more into retro-restoration than modding. I had tried in the past (~10yrs ago) to find a way to cope with the broken heads in the original sony drives, but failed miserably. I am looking for a way to make the old hardware work, like it used to. If necessary, I would go for another manufacturer's FDD, but never for a solid state mod.The furthest I managed to go with original Apricot modding, was to externally attach a st225 or st251 through a ribon on a white Apricot PC, and boot from it (as drive A: if I recall), but never any further. The controller was salvaged from an Apricot Portable if my memory is correct (it was back in 2001~2002). It was ugly, and I hated it, so I dismantled it a couple of weeks later.----- Original Message -----From: Robin EnglandSent: Tuesday, December 20, 2011 2:10 PMSubject: Re: [actapricot] Re: qdae 0.0.6 releasedWhat are you trying to do? Attach a new FDD to Apricot hardware? There is a hardware device that emulates disk images (using a removable flash memory card) and it has an Apricot-compatible FDD interface, although I have not tried it myself. I think an adapter cable might be needed too.If you (or anyone) gets one of these and tries it on any Apricot machine, I’d be really interested to hear how it goes. I’m sure there are others here who would have an interest too.CheersRobin
and if you manage to find me a way to repair/replace the fdd drives, you'll have some more active hardware on the list (PC, Xi, Portable) ;-)----- Original Message -----From: Robin EnglandSent: Monday, December 19, 2011 10:45 AMSubject: Re: [actapricot] Re: qdae 0.0.6 releasedThere are quite a few of us here still with an interest in the Apricot machines and watching the email threads with interest...nope, you are not the last ones :p----- Original Message -----From: john_elliott_ukSent: Sunday, December 18, 2011 11:48 PMSubject: [actapricot] Re: qdae 0.0.6 released

The simplest method is to boot from a MS-DOS floppy and type
FORMAT A: /SC:

Looks like it.
