Anvil, from Anvil! The story of Anvil

Film Review: Anvil! The story of Anvil (4 stars)

      Normally,
it's hard to imagine getting misty-eyed during a heavy-metal rock show,
what with all the allusions to Satan, sex and super-perms. Still, there
was little I could do to avoid welling up during the final few minutes
of Sacha Gervasi's pitch-perfect Anvil! The Story of Anvil. The
documentary, which premiered to overwhelming buzz at last year's
Sundance film festival, is the rare example of a project living up to
its blog-fuelled hype, whereas its comrades so often fall flat (I'm
looking at you, Happy American Teen Goes Sunshine Cleaning in Texas).

      Gervasi's
tale starts off in 1984, with Toronto-bred rockers Anvil playing to
sold-out crowds in Japan along with such legends as Bon Jovi,
Whitesnake and Scorpions. Watching the outrageous performances of lead
singer Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner (no relation to
Meathead, although the film does have more than a few Spinal Tap-like
moments), it's not hard to imagine the band rising to the top of the
hair-metal charts. Unfortunately, the Japan gig was to be their career
highlight. As Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich explains, Anvil "were just
      dealt a bad hand."
