- ST. GEORGE - The Washington County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team helped hikers travel off Red Mountain north of Ivins on Monday after the group wandered off the trail and got stuck on a ledge.
Washington County Emergency Services Director Pete Kuhlmann said the team received a call from the lost hikers at approximately noon from Red Mountain Wilderness, which is a Bureau of Land Management area.
The hikers did not sustain any injuries and seemed to be doing fine, Kuhlmann said a few hours after the team received the call. Rescuers hiked the travelers back down to safety after the group had spent a couple of hours Monday in the heat.
Search and Rescue has responded to several calls this month, according to the team's Facebook page, where members post photos and successful rescues for the public.
Some rescues have included finding missing hikers, helping a hiker off a high ledge, recovering a body after a drowning and finding and transporting an individual who was hurt while on horseback.
The team also recently completed high-angle training to help with rescues on steep ledges and those stuck while mountain climbing or injured in remote areas. Training included rappelling techniques and how to secure and transport injured individuals using stretchers on the sides of cliffs.
