      Lost hikers flown to safety

      Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Two lost hikers were flown to safety late Sunday during an air rescue in the White Pocket area of the Paria Plateau.

Earlier on Sunday, other members of the hikers' party called the Coconino County Sheriff's Office to say that the pair, both from Grand Junction, Colo., had not returned to their White Pocket-area camp in about 24 hours. The couple had left the group to hike and take photographs. Members of a private outdoor outfitters business reported a signal fire to authorities, and the sheriff's office asked the Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue helicopter to fly over the general area where the fire was observed.

Flight crew members spotted the two hikers from the air and were able to land nearby and get them aboard. Rough terrain prevented rescuers from reaching the hikers by conventional vehicles.

The White Pocket area is located southwest of Page.
