End the Hamas boycott now!

Zionism & Israel Center http://zionism-israel.comMany politicians, analysts and op-ed contributors in Europe are insisting that the Hamas boycott must be ended now. Indeed, they blame the boycott for the terrible Hamas butchery that has taken place in Gaza and the suffering of the Palestinian people. The UK UNISON trade union confederation has called for ending the boycott, though they want to start one of their own. Former UN Middle East Special Coordinator Alvaro De Soto scored the Hamas boycott as the source of all the problems in Gaza even before the Hamas coup.
We have to agree that the Hamas boycott is non-productive, and even evil. Boycotts are wrong. How can anyone boycott a legitimately elected democratic government? Therefore we call on the EU and the United States and the UN to pressure the Hamas to end its boycott of Israel, end its campaign to destroy a member state of the UN, and enter into immediate negotiations for a peace treaty.
Mr. Alvaro De Soto and his friends must surely agree that this is the productive and correct course. Javier de Solana and Israel foreign Secretary Tzippi Livni must immediately invite Mr. Hanniyeh, the elected Prime Minister of the Palestinian entity to come to Jerusalem, to the Knesset building, and to end the Hamas boycott of the democratically elected government of Israel. He will declare null and void all the passages of the Hamas charter that call for murder of the Jews, destruction of Israel and boycott of the peace process. For example, all of the following passages of the charter, as well as many others, will be abrogated:
"Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it."
"The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. "
"There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors."
That boycott, however, is not the one that should have been ended according Mr. Alvaro De Soto, the UN under-secretary who was Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. De Soto, rather than "Coordinating" the peace process, was interested in "coordinating" the destruction of Israel, and freely admitted his efforts to sabotage the peace process, which must begin with Hamas recognition of the right of Israel to exist. De Soto is urbane, literate and articulate. Such people are fully capable of spinning the most monstrous propositions in a way that makes them seem logical at first sight. In his "secret" end of mission report, which he took care to leak to the anti-Israel newspaper, the Independent, De Soto urged an end to the Quartet boycott of the Hamas. His rationale was that that would somehow induce Hamas to accept a cease fire.
Revealingly he wrote:
"In respect of the recognition of Israel, we knew that there was no chance that Hamas could agree to go further than to accept by implication what the PLO had agreed to explicitly in 1993 in the Oslo framework. To try to get them to go beyond this would have been a waste of diplomatic capital and of doubtful usefulness."
What would "useful" to De Soto, and what would serve the interests of peace, are two different things. But De Soto did not even try to get that goal accomplished either. As he tells us, his efforts had nothing to do with getting the Hamas to accept the conditions set forth by Palestinian President Abbas, and it end its boycott of Israel. Rather, he wrote,
"So we concentrated on addressing the need to end violence. In a nutshell, what we urged them to do was to declare that the NUG's priority was to maintain and expand the ceasefire, and that to that end they would marshal the various and sundry security bodies to work together not only to establish law and order but also to enforce the ceasefire. I would like to believe that the Europeans were working in the same direction; several representatives told me that if they said this and moved quickly to free the Israeli soldier, it was likely to produce a substantial shift not only in European policy but also in Israeli public attitudes."
The Europeans apparently think that Israelis are morons, and that we would be willing to negotiate with genocidal gangsters who intend to destroy us, if only they will release our kidnapped soldier. The effect of the cease fire, in the absence of any political changes in the attitude of the Hamas and the now defunct "Unity" government, would have been to secure Israeli acquiescence and international legitimacy for a genocidal government, which has demonstrated its true nature by butchering the members of its "partner" group in the "unity" government, the Fateh, and by torching churches. The reality of the "unity" government, as Israeli and U.S. diplomats correctly perceived, indeed, as everyone understood, was that Mr. Abbas and the Fateh had no real say in it, and that all decisions were made by the Hamas, presumably on orders from Khaled Meshal and his masters in Damascus. The eagerness with which Mr. De Soto and his friends, who must have known the truth, were will willing to sell out Israel and the Fateh to this monstrous government is instructive. Even now, after the real nature of the Hamas and of the "unity" government has been graphically and brutally illustrated by wholesale barbarism in Gaza, there are still "humanitarians" like De Soto, who are working tirelessly to legitimize these genocidal fanatics and enemies of humanity. Russia, Indonesia, Qatar and South Africa blocked a U.S. and EU initiative to back the government of Mahmoud Abbas.
Isn't it time to end the Hamas boycott, by ending the Hamas?
