I don't think I have any real spoilers here, but we are discussing a
series that people may have not finished watching, so better to be safe
Not really, sorry. I thought it was clear that Henrietta was in love
with Jose, and at the very least he's the most important person in the
world to her. And I don't think there can be anyone else for her. To my
mind, all the relationships in Gunslinger Girl are like a microcosm of
male-female relationships, albeit the unhealthy ones. The conditioning
they receive, I believe, subverts any free will they might have had in
determining their own feelings. And at their ages and the history of
trauma they all have had as a prerequisite, I'm not sure they have the
skills to cope with such intensity of emotion and they're certainly not
being taught any. Hence, my earlier predictions of tragedy for one and
all in this series, which was only partially borne out, however.
(Episodes 10 and 11 IIRC)
As an aside, the music for this series, was really outstanding (as has
been mentioned several times before) and has influenced my belief that
Gunslinger Girl could be a tragedy, especially the OP and the ED.
