      Dear Friends,

There are seven main systems of Indian philosophy, and the Raja Yoga
system is one of them. The first word of the first aphorism in all
the systems of Indian philosophy is atha. Atha means "now,"
implying "now, then, and therefore." This word explains the whole
truth of all the great philosophies of the world.

It means that before you study Raja Yoga, or apply the science of
Raja Yoga, you should prepare yourself. But Western people have no
time for preparation; they want to attain spirituality instantly,
like instant tea or coffee. Many teachers therefore commit a serious
mistake. They give students mantras and different techniques and
practices, but they do not prepare them properly. Thus the students
become confused and are not benefited.

There are many varieties of yoga, and all are equally respected, but
having many varieties can also confuse students. The truth is simple,
but some teachers can make it so complicated that the poor students
become bewildered. The Raja Yoga system, however, is a scientific
path, and along the path there are milestones so you can watch and
see how for you have to go. It is a beautiful path.*

      In loving service,

      Swami J
