as "global variables with varying values" and "loops" do not apply to XSLT
... one should regard XSLT as a templating language with built-in
facilities for iterating over information and counting the constructs found
in the source node tree. Variables are bound values and do not vary in
XSLT so could not be changed from within a "loop".
Perhaps if you expressed to the XSLT list the nature of the problem you are
trying to solve (are you interating over and numbering chapters? are you
summing a set of values to produce a total?) rather than asking how to
express a classical programming concept that may not apply to the language,
you might get a more applicable response to your question.
I hope this helps.
