Thanks a lot for your explanations and pointers.
Indeed the cure is putting the bg on the HTML element. It suppresses the need for
anything else such as zeroing the margins or paddings, as far as reaching the objective of
having a grey bg on the whole viewport is concerned. Which in turn leaves me the freedom
of setting margins & paddings to what best fits my mood.
And regarding my drivers for XHTML, basically I wanted to remain up-to-date. I've started
surfing the web with Mosaic, when images didn't display in the browser window. I've been
coding web pages irregularly since then, and each time I started again I discovered there
just another chapter.
In some sense I was starting to somehow feel like using XHTML in the real world would
cause more problems than it would solve. I'm reassured to read from you that "the world is
not ready yet".
