Since 1955, WLC has been working both in Canada and
overseas to change lives through education. Our literacy and
community development programs range from storytelling
festivals in Toronto to reading series in communities across
Canada to literacy programs for women and children in
      Varanasi, India.

On Monday, September 27, 2004, World Literacy of Canada will
be launching a year of special events with our 50th Anniversary
Celebration in Toronto. This event will feature Margaret Atwood, a
long time WLC supporter, launching her new book, Moving
Targets. Ms. Atwood will be interviewed by Eleanor Wachtel, from
CBC's Writers & Co., and will also be signing copies of her new
      book.

In addition, the evening will feature WLC stories, dinner, drinks
and a classical Indian dance performance. Invited guests will
include many prominent Canadian authors and publishers as
well as icons and celebrities from the film and literary
      community.

All proceeds from this event will support World Literacy of
Canada's educational programs in Canada and overseas. WLC
provides innovative literacy programs to underserved and
isolated communities across Canada and in South Asia. These
include after-school tutoring programs for children, women's
literacy groups, health initiatives linked to literacy programs,
storytelling festivals, sponsored field trips for underprivileged
students, book donations to schools, author presentations, and
public engagement activities to promote literacy and global
      citizenship.
