      "Ghana RYS Project "

      March 21 - April 3, 2008

This year's RYS 2008 project in Ghana will take place at Elubo in the Western border town between Ghana and Ivory Coast. Elubo has a population of about 15,000 inhabitants. It is six hours' drive by road from Accra, the capital of Ghana. Elubo is about three miles square in area. The inhabitants are mainly subsistence farmers. Some immigrants are doing brisk business in petty trading, both in export and import, due to the Elubo's location on the border between the two sister countries.

The year's Ghana RYS Project theme will be: "QUALITY EDUCATION AND GOOD HEALTH AS TOOLS IN THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF A NATION"

The project aims to complement the efforts of the government to construct a school feeding canteen. It is hoped that when the project is completed, the underprivileged children in the primary and Junior Secondary School, within the local cluster of schools, will enjoy at least one square meal a day according to government's school feeding program. At present, the pupils eat under very unhygienic conditions.

      "RYS Trainer Addresses 900 Youth"

On 8th Febuary 2008, Fazida Razak, a member of the RYS Global Management Team (GMT) was invited to give a talk to 900 students between the age of 12 to 17 at St John 23rd , Western Australia, about her work at Religious Youth Service and Interreligious Peace Sports Festival. About 100 teachers were also present for the talk.

In her half hour talk, Fazida acknowledged that more and more schools in Australia are inviting her to give talks about her work simply because schools want to take a more proactive approach in peace building and want to look for newer methodology that might appeal to their students. Students are also ready to contribute to this initiative and go beyond 'raising funds'.
