Unlikely friends at Moonies' peace gathering
What do Labour MP Stefan Buontempo, former president Guido de Marco and lawyer Emmy Bezzina have in common?--
They all happened to be special guests at the Universal Peace Federation Malta leg, where the wife of founder Sun Nyung Moon yesterday gave a keynote speech during a meeting held at the Westin in St Julians.
Known as the Moonies, the derogatory term coined for the movement created by Reverend Moon in the fifties, its founder claims he was called by Heaven to set up a movement with the aim of creating strong god-centred families.
Capitalism's own brand of peaceniks yesterday assembled decked in black suites with white button-hole flowers and white scarves symbolising peace, thrown around their neck.
Little did it matter that the federation's Malta representative, Emmy Bezzina, is defending in court Norman Lowell, who in his anti-semitic writings on the internet has even described war as a "hygienic exercise for the White race". All in the name of peace!
