GOVERNOR  OBI,  MINISTER ON BENEFITS OF ONITSHA SEAPORT

Governor Peter Obi says the Dredged Lower River Niger and the Onitsha Seaport are critical to the national economy.  Governor Obi was speaking as Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony of an international stakeholders Forum on the benefits of the Dredged Lower River Niger at Dolly Hills Hotels, Three-Three, Trans Nkisi Layout, Onitsha.

Governor Obi while expressing gratitude to President Goodluck Jonathan noted that Onitsha remains the engine of trade and commerce in the country and needs functional infrastructure and facilities that will enhance commercial activities.  He explained that the dredging and the seaport when functional will reduce the volume and burden on road transportation, decongest Lagos Port and other existing Ports as well as reduce cost of transportation of goods which he noted will reduce the cost shifted to the final consumer.

The Governor assured that all necessary support and encouragement will be given to ensure the objectives were achieved.

The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman in his speech, announced that the dredged Lower River Niger and Onitsha Seaport were now ready to use.  Alhaji Suleiman noted that the facilities will have great impact and multiplier effect on the economy of the country and unlock the huge potentials of the water ways which he said have been under-utilized for decades.  He charged local and foreign investors to take full advantage of the new opportunities, assuring that government will put in place necessary measures to maximize benefits in the transport sector, create employment, encourage public-private partnership, stimulate tourism and ensure proper maintenance of the dredged channels.

The minister equally assured that government will equally put in place effective security network to check the menace of pirates and other forms of threat in the water ways.

A representative of the Director General Nigeria Investment Promotion Council, Mrs Yinka Fayomi said the projects have widened scope of business opportunities in the country and urged investors to explore the available potentials.

Also speaking, a stakeholder, Chief Natha Okechukwu [Ochendo] said the completion of the projects will now enable importers to transport their goods directly to Onitsha which he noted will reduce the overall cost of investment.
