      Stop blaming the feral cats

By KATE BONNY / Viroqua , Wis.

I read in the Dec. 14 issue of the Tribune that the Wisconsin Audobon Society planned to count feral cats as well as birds during its annual Christmas bird count. Unfortunately, the bird-counters would count cats, but probably not feral ones.

Feral cats want little or nothing to do with human strangers — they will hide when the counters come into their territory. The cats being counted will be the neighbor’s indoor/outdoor cat, the farm-down-the-road’s barn cat or a stray that some irresponsible person dumped off.

Free-roaming cats do kill birds (as well as mice and moles) but not all free-roaming cats are ferals. Let’s stop blaming the ferals for everything. The problem is irresponsible humans — and that’s a bird of a different feather.
