I would like to suggest an alternative to any official Windows search mechanism. It's called Agent Ransack and it is fast and clean and truly wonderful. I have been using it for years and use it almost every day.

You can point to an entire partition or any folder to do the search on and you can automatically include all subfolders and you can download and install it here:

      http://www.mythicsoft.com/page.aspx?type=agentransack&page=home%c2%a0

Once installed when you open explorer you can right click on the partition or any folder within and you will see an option to use Agent Ransack. The following are some of the ways you can do the search:

wood    = will list all your files containing the string wood in the name

wood*bike  = will list all your files containing the string wood AND the string bike in the name.

*wood*.txt  = will list all your text files that contain the string wood in the name.

*wood*.jpg  =  will list all your pictures that contain the string wood in the name.

You can also search the CONTENTS  of files for strings.  For example to find all your text files that contain the string oops,

put *.txt in the File name and oops in the field called Containing text:
