Jim Whitten, Dean of Business and Community Partnerships – Update on Picnic Field Events

SMCC has limited events in the picnic field to one major event per weekend (unless events were scheduled prior to moratorium); many of these events are smaller than in previous years and do not include amplified sound.
SMCC has raised its fees to offset the revenue the College is turning away to make this happen.
Events have not been scheduled after 8 pm (unless event had been scheduled prior to moratorium).
The guidelines for usage of the picnic field by groups on which the committee provided input are now included in SMCC’s contract with each group.
Groups contracting to use the picnic field are expected to monitor their decibel level so that it does not exceed 90 decibels.
SMCC is currently working with the City to add a hinge to the Beach St. gate for when that gate needs to be removed to access the field.
SMCC will continue to have staff at each event. Concerns arising during an event may be directed through SMCC Security, who will be able to reach this staff member. The security number is 741-5553.
SMCC is working to put the event schedule on the community events calendar on SMCC’s web site at www.smccme.edu.

      SMCC Update

SMCC has spent much time reviewing is safety and security policies and procedures in the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech.
The College has been fortunate to discover that many of the changes the College has made in preparation for opening the new hall have already addressed some of these types of issues. This includes a very strict Student Code of Conduct that results in action being taken to address potentially dangerous situations swiftly and yet still confidentially.
The College is fortunate to have strong relationships with the South Portland Police and Fire Departments as many of their employees are graduates of our programs and already familiar with the campus, a fact that would assist in an emergency situation.

The recent storm has hit SMCC particularly hard. The College lost two roofs and because the power was off for about 12 hours, many basements were flooded. The College is making every effort to restore facilities with as little impact on budgets as is possible.
