5:30 p.m. – Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow and Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer hold a New York State Budget Town Hall, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, 127 S. Broadway, Yonkers.
Attached is a brief overview of the state budget that Hunger Action Network has compiled.
These days a lot of other issues get tied into the state budget - such as the minimum wage.
Wage theft is a big concern. Cuomo failed to increase funding for more NYS Labor Dept. staff to investigate wage theft, which costs NYC workers alone $1 billion a year. Cuomo last week put out a news release on this saying they are doing a great job, they managed to collect $23 million in stolen wages. So he is feeling the heat. There is a two year, 15,000 case backlog.
Need more funding for emergency food, affordable housing, and especially job creation. Instead of using the $1.3 billion welfare surplus as a slush fund for state and local fiscal relief, this money should be reprogrammed for transitional jobs. And to help offset the $600 to $700 million NYS residents just lost in food stamp benefits from the Nov. 1 cuts and the recent farm bill (HEAP Provision will cost 300k NYS households more than $90 a month).
