Hunger Action Network Statewide Conference Poughkeepsie Sept. 24
Farm Bill, Minimum Wage, Ending Childhood Hunger Key Topics

Hunger Action Network's 30th anniversary annual membership meeting will take place in Poughkeepsie on Monday Sept. 24 from 9:30 to 4 PM at the Family Partnership Center, 29 Hamilton St. Brian

Hunger continues to rise in New York State, while federal funding for emergency food and food stamps / SNAP is being cut. The conference is an opportunity for anti-hunger advocates across New York State to strategize about how to end in NY and nationwide in the coming year. The meeting will also discuss how to help Governor Cuomo follow-up with his call to make sure that no child goes to bed hungry.

The keynote speaker will be Janet Poppendieck, whose latest book, Free for All: Fixing School Food in America, looks at how better to feed our nation's children. Her prior books, Deep in Breadlines and Sweet Charity, examined the challenges and roles of emergency feeding program. As Hunger Action observes our 30th anniversary, she will help us figure out how better to end hunger in New York and America.

The afternoon workshops will look at future directions and challenges for emergency food program as well as examining the role discrimination (e.g., disability, race) plays in poverty and hunger. One workshop will focus on the role of food justice in the anti-hunger movement, including an update on the reauthorization of the federal Farm Bill and the attacks on SNAP / food stamps.

There is a suggested $10 registration fee ($5 low-income) which includes lunch. For more information contact Deb Catozzi in HANNYS' Albany office (518 434-7371 xt 3#, debcatozzi@...) . Vans from ALbany and NYC (212 741-8192 xt 5#)
