Lighthouse QRM to GPS to be Toast...
- If you have heard about it, the FCC gave a huge chunk of spectrum to a wireless company called Lighthouse, who was going to light up 40,000 nodes around the US for wireless. Each running over 1,000 watts. The problem? The spectrum is right next door to the GPS frequencies, of which we are trying to receive 10 watt signals from space. The FCC bypassed 2 procedures that are required when they repurpose spectrum. The spectrum was marked for satellite uplinking.
Anyway, the US NTIA, who controls all frequencies within the federal government, said that Lighthouse may not operate. Too much interference to government GPS systems. The FCC then said, well, ah, 'What they said".
From www.thebdr.net :
LightSquared had its conditional approval to operate terrestrial transmitters on frequencies near GPS use pulled by the FCC on Tuesday as a letter from the NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration) regarding their study had determined there was interference with GPS receivers, and there was no practical way to mitigate the potential interference within the next few years. The wavier for operation, granted by the FCC to LightSquared, was "suspended indefinitely,"
