The CQ WW VHF contest is today and tomorrow. 1800 UTC July 17 to 2100 UTC July 18th. Rules link: http://www.cqww-vhf.com/
Expect at least some sporadic E skip on 6m, where the band is open to various parts of the USA/VE, plus sometimes XE-land and the Caribbean. Tonight, overnight and into tomorrow morning, look for tropo enhancement on 2m. The cross-lake path between MI and WI is often workable with external antennas and at least 25-50w output power. Consider taking your show mobile if you have a poor QTH. Drive to a high spot and operate rover.
6 and 2m are basic VHF bands that many hams have. If you want to hear what widespread activity sounds like, today and tomorrow are excellent opportunities.
More info is available at kc9bqa.com. This includes rover plans, plus helpful hints. If you get the VHF/UHF bug, then I suggest these links for further study:

You are free to pass those links to anyone you think might be interested. The reason I do this VHF/UHF promotion is to increase activity. More Activity = More Fun.
