Technical Large Animal Rescue
Technical large animal rescue is an infrequent, inherently dangerous type of heavy rescue. This class teaches the aspects of large animal rescue to keep the responders, victim, and victim animals as safe as possible. This instruction covers the Incident Command System in this type of emergency so the large animal responders can support the incident commander in emergency situations. This course teaches animal behavior in emergencies, trailer accidents, moving and extracting recumbent animals with aspects of rope and mechanical rescue, as well as euthanasia considerations. The training also consists of trailer safety, barn safety, rescue equipment and its utilization as well as equipment improvisation with local emergency responders. The training time is 10+ hours, depending on the size and experience of the group instructed.
The instructor is Sergeant First Class Michael Connell from the NV Army National Guard Joint Operations Center. SFC Connell is a former working cowboy, currently a part-time farrier and animal science major through Kansas State University. He is a veteran of Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom with currently 25 years of service in both Air Force and Army. He is certified operationally in Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue and has experience in live rescue locally.
This class is sponsored by the State of Nevada Division of Emergency Management so comes at no charge to students/responders in Nevada.
