Pedestrian Fatalities in D.C. Up Sharply Over 2006
- December 1, 2007 - 9:14amWASHINGTON (AP) - The number of pedestrian deaths this year in Washington has reached 24. Officials say that's the highest number since 1997.
The latest fatality occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Friday. Twenty-six-year-old Francis Joseph Ryan was struck while crossing the street in the Columbia Heights area of Northwest Washington.
Erik Linden is a spokesman for the city's transportation department.
He says that so far this year, seven more pedestrians have been killed than in all of 2006.
Linden says the number of pedestrian fatalities is up in part because people are walking more.
