- If you're at a public event and the photographer has free access to you as an attendee or participant, then the photographer owns the copyright to the image he creates with you in it and has the right to sell it. However, the photographer should get a model release and/or pay you if the image is being used to promote a product being sold -- such as a car or rifle or pair of boots. A book of images from the event doesn't fall into that category.
