      War of 1812
      School of the Sailor

Members of the Naval Establishment, Crown Forces North America, including members of HM Royal Marines, the 41st Foot, and the Royal NFLD Regiment, are alerted that examination has begun toward the possible presentation of a School Of The Sailor in June of 2010, in ongoing preparation for the upcoming 2012-2015 Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

The School would provide experience-based seamanship instruction in both ship's boats and a larger vessel, to be either a brigantine or gaff schooner, supplemented by shore instruction in ropework and knotting, leading toward formal certification in various levels of seamanship in the Naval Establishment.

The venue of the School is proposed as Kingston, Ontario, the War of 1812 base of Sir James Lucas Yeo's Lake Ontario squadron, using the facilities of possibly Royal Military College (the former RN Dockyard) or Naval Reserve Division HMCS CATARACQUI, or a combination of both.

Elements of the School would include:

. Accommodation and meals provided in return for a small registration fee.
. Training in both the boats and the sailing vessel.
. All participants to dress as ordinary seamen of 1812: no officer's or NCO's dress to be worn.
. Issuance of a Certificate of Participation.
. Contract support for participating longboats.
. Commodore's 'Meet and Greet' on arrival.
. Traditional 'Up Spirits!' on training completion.
. Evening 'run ashore' in uniform to traditional pub.
. Operations in the waters of Kingston harbour and Lake Ontario.
. Certification of instruction toward advancement in rank.
. Secure ramping and jetties for all participating vessels.
      . Free secure vehicle parking.

Confirmation that the School will take place will be announced as soon as it is known, and registration information provided at that time.

I have the Honour to be,
      Gentlemen
      Yours with great Regard
