I read this one too and recall a few more details that would help with confusion. As I remember, George Washington became the first Member of Parliament from America, thereby eliminating one of the reasons for the Revolution ("Taxation without representation!") which I believe might be perceived as a victory, not a defeat.
Without the Revolution, the British Empire was too strong to take on, the "Napoleonic era" was very brief and, without the countless wars of our 19th and 20th centuries, the science of war was inhibited. This results in a Victorian/Edwardian lifestyle lasting well into the late 20th century, complete with dirigibles and steam powered automobiles.
