      Chris,

      Good morning!

When Jackson was assigned command of the TN Militia
during the first phase of the Creek War he was
suffering from wounds inflicted during a brawl with
the Benton brothers, Thomas and Jesse Hart Benton. It
was a full fledged brawl taking place, not on the
dueling grounds but in a hotel corridor and street in
Nashville, TN. Bad blood had been simmering between
them for some time until it finally erupted as Jackson
and John Coffee were on their way to the Nashville
      Post Office.

It was not a duel in the sense one might consider, or
that enumerated in the Code Duello. Public sentiment
was so outraged afterward that the Benton brothers
      fled to Missouri Territory.

Jackson did carry the pistol ball for the rest of his
      life.

In later life after Thomas Hart Benton became an
influential Senator he and Jackson mended fences.
Jackson offered to have the ball removed surgically
and returned to Benton the proper owner. Thomas Hart
Benton refused the offer saying Jackson had had it for
so long it was now his rightful property.

See you at Dade's in December.

      All the best,
      S.
