      Naval Establishment Boatwork Standards

      Coxswains and other boat commanders and owners are reminded that
      boats and crews must adhere to the following standards as
      participants vessels of the Naval Establishment Longboat Flotilla

      1. All boats must carry aboard all necessary equipment to satisfy CCG
      and USCG safety requirements.
      2. Boats crews are to be in correct variations of 1812-era naval
      dress, and smartly turned out.
      3. Coxswains are to use approved historical commands for boatwork,
      with no modern intrusions.
      4. Boats shall have all fenders and mooring lines inboard when
      5. Boats shall be rowed (pulled) smartly in unison, not 'water-
      spider' style.
      6. All boats crews shall have mastered, and be able to execute
      properly, the 'Toss Oars'.
      7. Under NO circumstances is a crewman, coxswain or officer to sit up
      on the gunwale when underway, either under oars or sail.
      8. When under sail, all boats crews are to sit down on the
      floorboards, not on the boat's thwarts, with the exception of
      officers and the coxswain.
      9. All boats shall obtain, and fly, a correct post-1801 Red Ensign at
      all times when underway
