Ed - ever notice how the Royal Marine motto is very similar to the Clan
Donald family motto "Per Mare Per Terras"? This topic was discussed in an
article in CLAN DONALD MAGAZINE NO. 9 published by the Clan Donald Society
of Edinburgh. It seems that a number of MacDonalds were officers in the
corps.(10 between 1760 and 1800) and there is a possible connection.
There is correspondence copied in this article from the Corps Archivist at
the Royal Marines Museum which states in part "Between 1775 and 1827, when
the present motto was officially recognised and borne on the colours, five
mottos were used by the Corps. In 1775 PER MARE PER TERRAM was in use; in
1803 PER MARE TERRAMQUE VINCIMUS; IN 1806 UBIQUE PER MARE PER TERRAM. In
1775 NEE ASPERA TERRENT was also used, in common with many Army Regiments."
All the best to the Royal Marines!
