The "Cock Of The Walk" Trophy

      Background:

In the days of the traditional Navy, a squadron might come to an anchorage in some remote port or bay, and each ship would lower a boat that would take part in a variety of competitions with the boats of the other ships. The winner of these competitions was named the "Cock Of The Walk" i.e. the dominant rooster. To win this title carried some status and pride.

      Our version:

The Naval Establishment "Cock Of The Walk" competition will take place at the anchored Squadron once the Longboat Flotilla has rowed out to it and gone alongside for deck tours (at the captains' discretion) and general greetings. It will take the form of a clockwise Rowpast around the anchored Squadron by all participating boats, starting and beginning from a line abeam of, and inshore from, the flagship "Saint Lawrence II", and commencing from a gun fired from "Fair Jeanne". Crews of the boats will NOT be racing to be first around: rather, they will be judged on the smartness and accuracy of themselves and their boat; their seamanship and rowing style; and general atmosphere of the Navy of 1812. On completion of the Rowpast, the boats will hook on to the anchored ships again for a rest until a Rehearsal of the Assault Landing in conducted, which comes next.

The Squadron Commodore will present the "Cock of the Walk" Trophy to the winning boat's coxswain at the 'Splice The Main Brace' in Navy Hall at 1600 Saturday. The winning boat will retain the Trophy for a year, and return with it to next year's School of the Sailor---to defend it!

I have the Honour to be,
      Gentlemen
      Yours with great Regard
