Possibly for us in the 1812 Re-enactment Community we can take a little
time to reflect on how the holidays were celebrated by those caught up in
the conflict we know as the War of 1812 ... Also remember our soldiers who
are spending this Holiday Season in a foreign county.

      * On December 21st and December 22nd, Woodside will be in full Christmas
attire under the enchanting glow of candlelight and lamplight.

Woodside is the boyhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada's
longest-serving Prime Minister. The house has been restored to the Victorian
style of the 1890s. The importance of this residence is best reflected in
King's own words: "The years that left the most abiding of all impressions
and most in the way of family associations were those lived at Woodside."
Woodside is located in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada

Here is one that had me rolling in the floor, I stole it from another list...

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all...and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2005, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "America" in the Western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual orientation of the wishee.

This wish is limited to the customary and usual good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first. "Holiday" is not intended to, nor shall it be considered, limited to the usual Judeo-Christian celebrations or observances, or to such activities of any organized or ad hoc religious community, group, individual or belief (or lack thereof).

Note: By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher at any time, for any reason or for no reason at all. This greeting is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. This greeting implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for the wishee her/himself or others, or responsibility for the consequences which may arise from the implementation or non-implementation of same. This greeting is void where prohibited by law.

                or to put it better:

                HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Woodside is the boyhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King,
                  Canada's
longest-serving Prime Minister. The house has been restored to the
                  Victorian
style of the 1890s. The importance of this residence is best reflected
                  in
King's own words: "The years that left the most abiding of all
                  impressions
and most in the way of family associations were those lived at
                  Woodside."
Woodside is located in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada

My apologies for this request, please bear with me but you guys are the only
trusted connections I have into the history of events over the pond. I've
recently finished re-reading Shelby Foote's Civil War masterpiece and I am
very interested in some of the Characters. In particular I'm looking for a
recommendation of a biography of General R.E.Lee. I've just finished Burke
Davis' "Gray Fox" but that ends with the surrender at Appomattox, what
happens afterwards? He lived another five years and........!!

Also if anyone has any recommendations regarding good biographies of
Jefferson Davis I'd be delighted to hear them. I'm not particularily
Confederate orientated, its just that our history tends to be taught from
the Unionist angle and I'm interested in otherside of the events.

Again apologies for being off topic.

                        Cheers

                          Hello Peter,

A couple of suggestions for Civil War reading:

                          Robert E. Lee - by Emory M. Thomas - (1995)
Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour - by William C. Davis - (1991)

This is just the tip of a very large iceberg. One could spend a lifetime
reading about the War between the States - from someone silly enough to
                          try...

There was a book out about twenty years ago called "Lee: The Last
Years" by Charles Bracelen Flood. I haven't read it, but I remember
it getting quite a bit of acclaim, and as the title suggests, it
focuses on those years after the war when he was at Washington & Lee
University (then Washington College). I think at the time it was a
Book of the Month Club selection and best seller. I see from Amazon
that it is still in print.
